Our Blast after-school enrichment program for grades K-5 offers innovative opportunities for students to further expand their skills and interests.
Blast 3rd Session - 2010

Become a Math Wizard! Learn awesome math tricks to amaze you and your friends! You will become a math genius with the help of Gregg, who has been making math interesting for hundreds of students for many, many years! You also will receive a copy of Gregg's book, Math Tricks for Geeks Like Gregg. You will discover how much fun math can be! Minimum 5 students. Additional $5 book fee not included and calculator's are necessary. Minimum of six students and maximum of 10.
Young Rembrandts - Grades K-5. Monday 3:45-4:45
Young Rembrandts is based on an acclaimed, step-by-step drawing method which works hand-in-hand with our original, innovative curriculum introduces ideas and techniques that enlarge and enrich their visual vocabularies, their imaginations and their minds. Pottery – Grades 3-5. Tuesday 3:45-4:45 (8 Weeks)
Learn to pour a ceramic mold with slip, clean/fire and paint the finished piece (each student would get to do their own). Make a hand built clay bowl, with pressed leaves/flowers, fire and glaze. Design and create a tile mural tray and mosaic picture frame (design, tile, and grout). The Art of Jewish Papercutting 2D – Grades 3-7. Wednesday 3:45-5:15 (1.5 hours - 5 Weeks)
Students will learn an art form that is old as paper and has been rooted in many cultures for centuries. In this unique workshop, students will be exposed to the traditional folk art of Papercutting and will create their own personalized papercuts from idea to finished piece. This is a great way for children to work on their fine motor skills in a creative, noncompetitive environment. We will cover several techniques including cutting with scissors and exacto knives, symmetrical as well as non-symmetrical pieces, background painting and multi-layer papercuts. Students are encouraged to come with ideas, including a favorite passuk, or picture, or select from those that will be provided. Minimum number of students seven, Maximum number of students 13. Cost $75 Course Fee, $25 Materials Fee.
The Art of Jewish Papercutting 3D - Grades 3-7. Wednesday 3:45-5:15 (1.5 hours - 4 Weeks)
Utilizing the basic principles of the traditional folk art of Jewish Papercutting, we will apply these to 3 dimensional surfaces to create beautifully decorated functional wooden objects (such as wall plaques, jewelry boxes, mezuzot, Chamsas, etc.) Several techniques will be explored including staining and texturing of the wooden backgrounds, layering, painting and collage. Minimum number of students seven Maximum number of students 13. Cost: $75 Course Fee, $25 Materials Fee.
Science Matters – Mixology - Grades K-5. Wednesdays 3:45-4:45
Are you ready to mix things up a little? Join us as we experiment with some crazy chemical reactions. We'll heat things up and cool things down. Mix things that glow or overflow. Mix things that bubble without trouble. This is fun chemistry that needs no apology.
SpaceTime – Mission: Solar System – Grade K-3. Wednesday 3:45-4:45
Set sail on an amazing journey through our cosmic neighborhood with SpaceTime's MISSION: SOLAR SYSTEM Program. This program will take you on a hands-on & minds-on adventure through the Solar System where you will get to explore the moons of Jupiter & Saturn, search for signs of life on planets & moons, build your very own SpaceTime Cosmic Cruisers, pilot a remote controlled planetary rover, hear the sound of the Sun and much more. And be warned. you may get Space Slimed!" Minimum of eight students and maximum of 14.
Spanish 2 – Grades K-5. Wednesday 3:45-4:45
This course is designed for students who have a basic conversational level in Spanish. This level will go into present tenses of regular and irregular verbs and conjugating them. The grade level is more academic than numerical. Students must show proficiency in basic conversational Spanish to be in this class. Carolina Alsup has taught many levels and currently tutors at Cottonwood Elementary School. Minimum of four students and maximum of eight.
Flag Football – Grades 2-6. Thursday 3:45-4:45
Football is now year round! Meet Mr. Blake Cohen on the "grid" for fun with flags. Flag Football will run rain or shine, except in the case of an all out blizzard. So dress warm and plan to slosh around if it is wet.
Fantasy Quest - Grades K-5. Fridays 3:00-4:15
In Fantasy Quest, now known as Hero's Destiny, children become the heroes of an epic adventure story set in a unique fantasy world. They are guided by professional, highly-trained storytellers who create the world as they go, improvise the story based on the choices made by the children, and act the parts of the characters with whom the children interact. The quest continues!
Tennis - What a Racket - Grades K-5. Fridays 3:00-4:00 Limit 15 students – first come, first served.
Tennis Anyone? A lot of fun! We will learn strokes and play games and win prizes! Tennis is a life sport! Once you learn it you can play it your whole life! Come and join us and see why! Coach Rachelle Lifpitz is USPTA certified. Coach Lifpitz offers this class to both beginners and experienced players. Students need to provide their own rackets. Minimum of 6 and maximum of 15 students.
Children's Etiquette and Dining Skills Workshop – 1 WEEK CLASS Grade K-2 - March 12th; Grade 3-5 - March 19th
Give your child skills that will last a lifetime. Fun and informative programs will build confidence and self-esteem for meetings, introductions, conversing, and dining skills. The program includes role-playing exercises, hands-on instructive materials, and a worksheet for each student to keep as a reference guide.
