Re-enrollment Contracts
Herzl/RMHA re-enrollment packets for the 2010-11 school year will be mailed Monday. We sincerely hope that you will once again give us the privilege of educating your child(ren). Please return the re-enrollment contracts no later than Friday, February 26. 

If you have a concern about next year, please be sure to contact me or the appropriate school administrator so that we can address your concern. We value each and every student and family and we want to do our best for you.

LOWER SCHOOL

Kudos to PTO and Helping Hands
The movie night was a great success! Over $1,000 was raised for Haiti. Many thanks to PTO and Helping Hands who organized the program and also to those who attended.

Passover Program Dates
Please mark your calendars now for Lower School Passover Programs. The dates and times are as follows:

Kindergarten- March 23 1:30 –3:30 am
Grades 1-2 - March 18 8:30 –9:30 am
Grades 3 –5 March 25 8:30 –9:30 am

Parents are invited to attend these special programs that will highlight various parts of the Passover Curriculum taught in classes.

Optional Parent/Teacher Conferences
This year's optional Parent/Teacher conferences have been scheduled for Wednesday, February 10th. Instead of participating in professional development activities that Late Start morning, teachers will be available to meet between 7:30-9:30 am. They also will be available on the same day from 4:00-6:00 pm. for Parent/Teacher conferences.

If you would like to schedule a conference during this time, please download the Parent/Teacher Conference Form by clicking on this link or contact one of your child's teachers directly via e-mail. Teachers may also contact some families directly to set up a conference if they have issues they would like to discuss with parents. Please note that this is an opportunity for any family to set up a conference if they would like to meet to discuss their child's mid-year progress.

Lower School Informational Math Night
Please mark your calendars now for an informational meeting that will highlight our Investigations math curriculum. This meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 17th at 7:30 pm in the Lower School Rubenstein Library. We have invited Mr. Rob Nickerson, math curriculum consultant for Jefferson County Schools. He will highlight the goals and objectives of the Investigations Mathematics and encourage discussion regarding the program. We invite all Lower School parents to attend this educational evening. Please RSVP to the Brigitte in the Lower School office by February 12th.

Blast Update
Coach Rachelle returned for the second session of Blast Tennis last week. After a warm up and relay race, students worked on volleys. They then played short court tennis and were rewarded with treats for their hard work.

Volunteers Needed
March is National Nutrition Month. Please attend a meeting Friday, February 8th at 8:00 am in the Lower School Discovery Lab to help organize a Herzl/RMHA health fair. Contact Lauren Davidson or Angel Chelik for more information.

UPPER SCHOOL

Second semester begins
Report cards for the first semester will be available on-line beginning January 29. Please let the office know if you do not have Internet access. The second semester began on January 25. Students have the opportunity to start over with a clean slate in all their classes.

Head's Letter
Check your mail for the head's letter that comes at the end of grading periods. You will find it loaded with information no parent should be without.

Trips out-of-school:
Darfur Forum
On February 3, ninety-three students in grades 7,8,10 and 11 will travel to the University of Denver for the 4th annual Student Forum. The guest speaker at the Forum will be Professor David Akerson, International Criminal Court lawyer and a witness for the Rwanda tribunal. The objective of the Student Forum is for students to learn that by being informed and standing united in speaking out against man's inhumanity to man, every action can make a difference.

Youth Event –Kareem Abdul-Jabbar "Brothers In Arms"
On Monday Feb. 22 8th graders will attend a program at the Colorado Convention Center sponsored by the Mizel Museum, Facing History and Ourselves, and the Denver Mayor's Office for Education and Children featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaking about his book "Brothers In Arms" the Epic Story of the 76th Tank Battalion, WW11's Forgotten Heroes. The 76th tank battalion, under the command of General George Patton, captured thirty towns, liberated Jews from concentration camps and made history as the first African American armored unit to enter the war.

Trip to Los Angeles
Grade 9 is getting ready for a trip to Los Angeles. Student will depart Denver on January 31, return Feb. 3, and attend classes again on Feb. 5. They will visit sites of Jewish interest such as the Museum of Tolerance, Wilshire Blvd. Temple, and other Jewish historical sites and stay at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute where they will participate in Jewish outdoor education.

Little Shop of Physics
We are looking forward to a return visit from Little Shop of Physics on February 16. Little Shop of Physics is a group of science educators and science students based at Colorado State University that travels the region with a van full of hands-on experiments that have been shared with over 250,000 students. Little Shop of Physics doesn't show students science; they help them do science. The goal is to teach people that science is something anyone can do. This year's theme is "Put a Spin on it."
 
Health Education Learning Programs
On January 27 the HELP (Health Education Learning Programs) Committee presented a program on driver safety to students in grades 9-12. Deputy James Englert spoke about drugs, alcohol, and driving, and students experienced impairment through "drunk goggles." Dawn Langford from MasterDrive spoke about preparation for driving and good driving habits. As part of the program, MasterDrive is offering a free (over $200 value) one-day driving skills clinic for licensed teen drivers to be used on Feb. 13 or 14. Interested parents should call Judy Sylvan for more information.
 
Announcing the Bryan M. Hay Community Service (Chesed) Award
Herzl/RMHA is thrilled to announce the creation of the Bryan M. Hay Community Service (Chesed) Award. An anonymous donor has established a college scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded annually to an 11th grade Herzl/RMHA student, beginning with the class of 2011

Any Herzl/RMHA 11th grader who has promoted and undertaken various acts of loving kindness (chesed) in school and in the broader community will be eligible for the $1,000 cash award, with 10 percent of the award directed to the student's charity of choice. Chesed activities that will be considered for this award can be in school, outside of school, part of an organized group or as individuals – anywhere and any way that they are meaningful to the student and the greater community.

Applications are due by March 15 of the student's junior year. The application requires a resume giving specifics of chesed activities and a 250-word essay reflecting on the meaning of the service(s). Herzl Helping Haiti Warm Fuzzy
Over 100 people cuddled up, ate snacks, watched a funny movie and enjoyed some wholesome fun while raising $1,000 for Haiti. The night was a great success with requests to have movies for older kids, over summer break and as fundraisers for class trips. Put in your request now for the next movie!!

Helping Hands is continuing to raise money for Haiti so you still have time to make a donation in the box in the office. We are so luck that we are in a situation to give.

Volunteer of the Week
What a compassionate Second Grade Class!! Thank you to Joel Douglas for selling his multi-color, handmade lanyards at Movie Night and donating all $68.40 in sales to the Herzl Helping Haiti fund. Thank you to Talia Williamson, Ellie Lozow, and Alexandra Kaufman for creating an Art for Haiti sale—look for their art coming soon. Thank you to Ari Diamond-Topelson for wanting to do the right thing and inspiring Herzl Helping Haiti!!

"The Wave"
Students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to attend the Colorado Premiere of the film, "The Wave" on February 14 at 3:15 pm at the Shwayder Theater in the JCC. JCC Ranch Camp
Sunday, January 31st, 3:00 pm. Caron Blanke and Dirk Bird are hosting an informational meeting at their house with JCC Ranch Camp directors, Miriam and Gilad Shwartz. Children going into second grade (an up) are eligible to enroll in sessions for this summer, at the JCC's residential camp located in the beautiful Black Forest.
