FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO

School Name
Herzl/RMHA at the Denver Campus has been very active in planning for its future. Over the last year, we have been working to develop a new strategic plan and enhance the marketing and branding of the school. One very important item that the strategic plan calls for is the development of a new name for the school. The strategic plan is on our web site at dcje.org under the About Herzl/RMHA tab.

Following the board's approval of the strategic plan in November a Naming Committee was established. The Naming Committee created a large list of names and then whittled the list down to five possibilities. We greatly value your insights and would like to gain your input on the five possibilities via a short electronic questionnaire. The survey should take approximately five minutes to complete. We would like to get your response by January 22, 2010.

To access the survey, click here or paste this address in your web browser: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/258TXLC

This survey has been emailed to parents, donors, alumni, faculty and staff and students in the Upper School. Please know that all responses will be completely confidential and will be reviewed by an outside party for the purpose of objectivity and confidentiality. The results of the survey will be brought back to the Naming Committee who will use the information to make a recommendation on a name to the Board of Trustees. The recommendation will then be brought to the Board of Trustees for a vote at the February meeting. The school will move forward with the new name for the 2010-11 school year.

We appreciate your time in assisting us with this important project that pertains to the future of our school.

Shabbat Shalom,
Avi Halzel
President/CEO

LOWER SCHOOL

We wanted to take an opportunity to share what we are doing on Tuesday, January 19. It is a K-12 Professional Development Day that will offer teachers and other staff members a chance to learn from one another. It is exciting to acknowledge the talent and knowledge that we have within our own community of teachers and administrators. We believe in promoting teacher leadership. Tuesday's professional development time offers us a wonderful opportunity for staff members to share with others a topic within their area of educational expertise.

Staff will participate in a number of sessions during the day that include such topics as:

• Curriculum Mapping
• Developing essential questions for learning
• Exploring one's creative and physical side
• Connecting to our world through our Jewish perspective
• Perfecting the use of technology in the classroom
• Enhancing collegial relationships to support professional growth

Our math teachers will spend time with Marty Caplan, a math consultant, who incidentally is a former Head of Herzl/RMHA Lower School.

We appreciate having a few days throughout the year for our staff to be able to work together to strengthen their skills and to to promote a K-12 sense of community.

Announcing the Bryan M. Hay Community Service (Chesed) Award
Herzl/RMHA is thrilled to announce the creation of the Bryan M. Hay Community Service (Chesed) Award. An anonymous donor has established a college scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded annually to an 11th grade Herzl/RMHA student, beginning with the class of 2011.

Any Herzl/RMHA 11th grader who has promoted and undertaken various acts of loving kindness (chesed) in school and in the broader community will be eligible for the $1,000 cash award, with 10 percent of the award directed to the student's charity of choice. Chesed activities that will be considered for this award can be in school, outside of school, part of an organized group or as individuals – anywhere and any way that they are meaningful to the student and the greater community.

Applications are due by March 15 of the student's junior year. The application requires a resume giving specifics of chesed activities and a 250-word essay reflecting on the meaning of the service(s).
